Right now DA is hosting a very sizable contest for the new Tomb Raider game. The contest involves drawing the new Lara Croft character.

I've had several artists ask for my permission to use my stock as reference for this contest, which I have given. (thank you for asking, I appreciate the communication)

However, I went over to browse the official rules of the contest:

- may NOT be recognizable as the actor Angelina Jolie or any other recognizable actor;

- must be the Entrant's original work made for the Contest and may not use stock materials from others although licensed brushes and textures are acceptable as well as original assets from the Entrant's own work;

- may reference but not actually duplicate visual materials provided in the Asset Pack.

What this means is that any art using my stock would be automatically disqualified for entry due to contest rules.
I would hate to see hard hours of work get wasted, so I would suggest not using my stock as reference for this contest.

I would assume the reason is of course the legal ownership of likenesses. If my face was entered in the contest, the company would then have to legally compensate me for display of my likeness.

I don't know what level of reference would be allowed (I.E. just an arm holding a bow) or if not recognisable reference is allowed. I would err on the side of caution to avoid disqualification.

It's a shame about the rules, considering your likeness to the new Croft!

When iam using stock for painting,iam only use the silhouettes of the poses.Most of the Images are never recognisable as a photo refrence.Iam painting everything on my own.

its good that youre looking out for people. I do think that there is a big difference between referencing something and actually using it. when so many people have a million photos of themselves doing this or that, there are bound to be poses that seem to be directly 'referenced" but there are just popular poses, ones that look better and will get used and repeated quite often. its not like any one of the models is the first who hold a bow in that way or photographer, the first to take a photo of that pose, likewise - an artist cant be expected to come up with a complete original way of holding a bow to not infringe on this no reference rule... they didn't say you couldn't reference, they say dont use stock. so looking at something to get a feeling for the pose should be totally fine - recognizable or not. Your face and likeness however - should definitely be avoided for the contest imo.

Thanks for that clarification. I'm not worried cause I changed your face to look more like the character from the video game. Thanks again for your permission. :)

I used an image from another stock artist as a point of reference, and drew my entry by hand, it's not recognisable as the stock artist would that be ok?
I just took it as, as long it wasn't a photo manipulation then it's ok.

I can't say for sure. I would contact the person hosting the contest and see what they think.

That is strange, I wonder if that rule is only for photo-manipulation, or if it counts for painting/drawing as well? Because I love using your stock and some others to draw and sketch from for a new character, but if even the pose is off-limits I guess I'll have to use strictly source-pack material...

Probably wise, it is very oddly worded

Ooh. So many people have worked so hard on those pieces (myself included, though I didn't use any stock images). I'd hate to see all that work go to waste.
