13/05/11 EDIT: I really love how this deviation turned into a discussion on teeth and dentistry stories. How did you lose your teeth? Do you find looking at teeth gross?
Wisdom tooth placed on a leaf fossil
When I read the description of the contest, I went and did pretty much exactly what it said. I went into my room and opened up my jewelry box. Nothing interesting in there. Then I went to my nightstand. Digging around, I found the container where I keep my wisdom teeth. I had all of them removed at once a few years ago in a very uneventful operation. And I started thinking about how my life has been different since that day. As the title says, I didn't feel much wiser, but I do feel a lot happier. Time makes old wounds heal, and experience leads to fond memories. I'll leave wisdom for when I'm older. I have things to do right now.
The technique here is more nostalgic than technical. The leaf fossil is a stone my grandmother gave me for my birthday when I was 11, half of my life ago. The tooth I kept for who knows what reason. Initially they were a trophy for having to put up with an IV. I have a phobia of needles. The picture was taken in the kitchen where I discuss my day, every day with my mother, on the dining table. Natural lighting from the window.
No tripod, no artificial light, no real setup, beyond propping up the tablecloth with a houseplant.

When I lost my first tooth I was six. It was a hot Saturday and I was watching TV upstairs eating a bannana and a fly flew in my mouth. I started to cough and splutter so I ran down stairs to go outside to Mum, but I was running so fast that I didn't see the door. I ran into it causing me to collapse on the ground and when I opened my eyes I saw my tooth infront of me... So I ran to Mum screaming in terror!
I'm scared to get my wisdom teeth out!! I've never had a tooth pulled out and hope I don't have to (but I know almost everyone gets their wisdom teeth out) sigh, why does it have to be so painful :/
With the right freezing, it doesn't hurt at all. ^^ (you may be a little sore afterward as the freezing wears off, but I've had headaches worse than what I felt)
When I had my wisdom teeth out they were still under my gums, so it wasn't a matter of them being pulled, but rather taking a bone saw to the inside of my mouth and extracting them that way. I got to keep my teeth, but they have saw marks in them haha!
I hate needles too, and I had to go under, and I remember them laying me back in the chair, taking my glasses off and telling me to listen as they counted back from ten. I looked up at the ceiling and thought to myself: I wonder if it is blurry because they took my glasses off, or if the anesthetic has kicked in?
Next thing I remember is my mom trying to hobble me to the car (I'm 6" taller and outweighed her by a good 20lbs).
I'm a dental assistant and may I say that is the biggest wisdom tooth I have EVER seen! You did a great job on the entire look of the shot! Brilliant! By the way, I really like your stock photos. They are very creative and thoughtful. You can tell that you enjoy doing it...
